Wonder Me!
Name:
-olol: beta blockers

Receptors:
blocks beta-1 selectively
ultra-short-acting beta-blocker (3)

Use:
- HTN ---- "Post operative hypertension is usually short lived and as such agents used to treat it should be short acting" (7)
- Tachy-arrhythmias ---- Esmolol is ideal for short-lived situation such as supra ventricular arrhythmia, pERIoperative tachy or peri-operative HTN (8)

Caution:
- Caution in asthmatics bc even tho esmolol is cardioselective, at high doses, it does activate beta2 receptors leading to bronchospasm (4)

Other:
Half-life: 9 minutes (1) => can be used in ICU (2) (my bf) because if a little overdose such as bradycardia in very sick patients happen, Esmolol can be withdrawn immediately  and will get out the system fast enuf (6). more preferred over propranolol for HTN treatment since proparanolol's half life is too long whereas esmolol half life is shorter (2) However, its complex drug regimen (5) (my bf), it's not used by many ppl but it's a beta blocker that is useful bc of its fast onset and fast half life.
Esmolol infusions should not be abruptly discontinued; the infusion rate should be tapered (1) => have to use a drip to titrate

Mnemonics: Eskimo-olol! => Eskimo boy on top of igloo => fear of heights => tachy & Hyper. only 1 eskimo igloo, only 1 eskimo creature on top => beta 1 (a penguin is not alpha-boy)
